The forthcoming 2021 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV is about to arrive, and this SUV will introduce plenty of upgrades. According to the latest spy photos, Mitsubishi will improve the styling, but not significantly. Moreover, Outlander will get a larger engine and a larger battery pack. Thanks to that, Outlander PHEV will arrive with improved performances.
Outlander SUV is a global model, so models for the U.S. and Asian-spec variant will offer different outputs. The price should slightly increase, thanks to the latest changes. Some reports are suggesting new architecture. It should be the same platform that made its debut in the Engelberg Tourer concept.
2021 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV Refreshed Design
As we said, new spy photos of the 2021 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV are showing the latest exterior upgrades. The new model will wear a refreshed design, and it will also arrive with slightly larger dimensions. However, the changes are not that drastic, and the PHEV variant won’t depart from the gasoline-powered Outlander in terms of aesthetics.
Some parts are hidden under the camouflage, but Outlander will surely introduce something new. The rumors are predicting more styling cues borrowed from the Engelberg Tourer concept. That means the Outlander PHEV will look even better and more attractive. The complete exterior design will happen for the 2022 model.
Interior Upgrades
The upcoming 2021 Mitsubishi Outlander will get more significant upgrades on the inside. The interior will introduce drastic refinements, but Mitsubishi refused to specify exact updates. The manufacturer promised the interior that is “loaded with technology.’ Thanks to that, we should expect a larger display, more standard equipment, and the latest driver-assistance aids.
On top of that, a new infotainment system should be in the offer too. Thanks to the latest dimensional changes, Outlander will get more interior room as well. That includes both legroom and cargo capacity. While the regular Outlander offers optional third-row, the PHEV variant remains a five-seat crossover-SUV. Lastly, Mitsubishi will once again offer the same five trim levels as before.
2021 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV Engine
The new 2021 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV will get a larger engine than its current 2.0-liter four-cylinder gasoline. It is a 2.4-liter four-cylinder naturally-aspirated unit that will produce 126 horsepower. This engine is mated to a pair of electric motors and a battery pack. Motors will provide an additional 93 horses. That means the total output will be 219 hp. On top of that, a 12-kWh battery pack is replaced with a larger 13.8-kWh battery.
Mitsubishi said the 2021 Outlander PHEV would offer a better range than the currents 22 miles. This SUV will arrive in Europe with the same engine and same specs, which is great.
Price and Release Date
The upcoming SUV will go on sale in the last quarter of 2020. The 2021 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV was planned for this fall, but the COVID-19 outbreak forced the Japanese manufacturer to move its launch date. The price will slightly increase, so the new model will start at above $30,000. Outlander will get a redesign and further changes in 2022. Thanks to that, Outlander PHEV will remain one of the world’s best-selling plug-in hybrids.
