2021 BMW X5 Xdrive45e Plug-In Hybrid Review

BMW unveiled its new X5 SUV with a hybrid powertrain. Dubbed the 2021 BMW X5 xDrive45e, this SUV will firstly go on sale in Europe. Of course, the ultimate goal is to reach American soil and that should happen at some point in 2021. That means we will focus on the Euro-spec X5 but a version for the U.S. won’t depart at all.

The upcoming X5 xDrive45e will offer astonishing performance and a high level of luxury, both in and out. Thanks to its mid-size dimensions, this SUV will compete with Volvo XC90 T8, Porsche Cayenne and Mercedes-Benz GLE.

In terms of design, a new 2021 BMW X5 xDrive45e will continue with drastic upgrades. This will be the next-gen model so expect significant exterior changes. However, the German manufacturer will keep its recognizable appearance but new refreshments are more than welcome. Some of the novelties are very interesting. For example, a new platform that can accommodate the hybrid system is finally here. The CLAR architecture will improve a vehicle’s efficiency and it will provide better ride quality.

The styling looks evolutionary and bolder than before. The kidney grille is present but BMW decided to modify it and make it bigger. New color options will become available, along with the new optional wheels.

On the inside, a new 2021 BMW X5 xDrive45e will look very modern and upright. Whatsoever, it is a premium SUV with plenty of high-tech features and driver-assistance aids. The new platform will bring more interior space but the battery will make new X5 to lose around 5 cubic feet of cargo space. That means the regular gasoline version will have a larger cargo area than the hybrid one.

Three-row seating layout won’t be changed and the first two rows will provide ample legroom. BMW will slightly change cabin design and it will add more chrome accents. The dashboard is relatively new, along with the HVAC vents so nothing will change there.

The new hybrid powertrain will improve efficiency and it will deliver more power than the regular X5 SUV. The forthcoming 2021 BMW X5 xDrive45e will deploy a 3.0-liter inline-six engine and pair it with an 82-kW electric motor. The total output has been rated at 395 horsepower.

The power is sent to all four wheels through an eight-speed automatic transmission. xDrive45e model will also deliver around 50 miles on all-electric power. As for the battery, BMW offers a 9.2-kWh lithium-ion battery pack. This mid-size SUV will offer around 45 mpg combined which is great. BMW said the X5 SUV with hybrid powertrain will reach from 0 to 60 mph in 5.6 seconds. Lastly, the xDrive45e model will offer 445 lb-ft of torque.

The upcoming 2021 BMW X5 xDrive45e will cost more than 60,000 which is the starting price of the regular BMW X5. However, exact pricing details are not available yet. We expect for the mid-size SUV to start at around $70,000 or slightly above that.

This model is currently under production and it will go on sale later in 2020 in Europe. As for the United States, BMW will open sales at some point during 2021. This SUV will try to rival Volvo XC90 T8, Porsche Cayenne, Range Rover Sport, and Mercedes-Benz GLE.
