Engine
Under the hood of 2020 Chevy Volt is a quite special unit that combines a 1.5-liter gasoline engine and pair of electric motors. The gasoline engine can produce 101 hp. But, the electric motors do all the work. First, they powered an 18.4-kWh battery, then the gas engine works as a generator, to provide electricity when the battery is spent.
This combination generates around 149 hp and 249 lb-ft of torque. The new Volt can travel up to 53 miles on electric power alone, and then another 367 on gas. So, the total range is 420 miles. Moreover, the regenerative braking will improve the electric-only power output.
Also, charging time will be improved as well, on 240-volt chargers, it takes around 4.5. Or, if you have the optional 7.2-kW onboard charger it takes only 2.5 hours. If you charge with a standard 120-volt outlet, the charging takes approximately 12 to 13 hours.
