Over the years, the BMW was really behind the Japanese companies, when the hybrid technology is in question. Then, in 2011 the Bavarian carmaker formed a special “i” sub-brand. However, the actual electrification started a little bit earlier. Now, the 2020 BMW i9 comes with a four-cylinder gasoline engine, in combination with two electric motors.
This will ensure a good amount of power and excellent performance. The lightweight construction of the body will help this sedan to move with less energy, and it will definitely improve maneuverability. Moreover, the interior will be very similar to the larger X7. That means one thing – a high level of luxury.

2020 BMW i9 Design
The announced 2020 BMW i9 will hit the streets shortly after the release of next-gen 5 series. So, the i9 will probably share the same Cluster Architecture (CLAR). This modular architecture helps the company to apply in vehicles with different sizes, and with different engines. The architecture includes hybrids, EVs, and smaller 3 series vehicles as well.
The new model will borrow some of the design cues from larger X7. Surely, the highlight of the i9 will be the laser headlights. These headlights are finally approved in the States. Furthermore, the new model will expand even further the elegant line of fastback sedans, with soft and classy creases.
The taillights will be the same as on new X7 model, while the four LED bands add the necessary dose of visual boldness. Moreover, the smart aerodynamic silhouette of the vehicle increases the striking effect and overall attractiveness.

Interior
We haven’t heard anything new, regarding the interior of 2020 BMW i9 in a while. But, from rumors and some unofficial news, we can put together some information and get the bigger picture. So, the cabin will be equipped similarly to the 7-seat X7, with good amount of high-quality materials. As with all of the models that came out of the famous German company, the high-end materials are simply a must-have.
Moreover, plenty of synthetic leather and recycled plastic will find its position in this cabin. The upcoming i9 is a plug-in hybrid vehicle. Therefore, we can expect a lot of displays to keep an eye on fuel economy and the energy. Of course, the engineers and designers still have enough time to carefully plan all the technology features and infotainment.

2020 BMW i9 Specs
According to the rumors, new BMW i9 will come with a four-cylinder gasoline engine in combination with a pair of electric motors. The gasoline mill will deploy 245 hp, and the front electric motor is good enough to produce extra 204 hp. On top of that, the rear motor will deliver an additional 95 hp. So, this mixture will produce 544 horsepower, and an 80-mile range on battery power alone.
Furthermore, the i9 will accelerate from 0-60 mph in 5 seconds, and the top speed will be around 120 mph. The driving range will probably be around 373, more or less. Also, the charging time will depend on the version. But, roughly it will take 3 hours.
Competition
One of the main competitors of 2020 BMW i9 surely will be the Tesla Model S. Also, fellow countryman Porsche Taycan may interfere in this clash. However, it’s hard to compare the vehicle, since they are, in terms of propulsion, very different cars. The Model S is fully electric, with the power from 380 hp 60 kWh to 691 hp with P85D model.
The 2020 BMW i9 will come with a gasoline generator as a backup to the electric motors. On the other side, the Model S can travel 208 to 253 miles on a single charge. But, Tesla’s Supercharger is in developing phase, and it will resolve the long-distance issues.

The upcoming model will probably get the Level 3 autonomy, similar to the Audi A7. Of course, it will be capable to upgrade to Level 4. But, we will have to wait for the release first. The debut is planned in the third quartal of 2020.
